What is Rattan?

Rattan is the name for roughly 600 species of the old world  The climbing habit is associated with the characteristics of its flexible woody stem, derived typically from a secondary growth, makes rattan a liana rather than a true wood.

Rattan Furniture

Rattans are extensively used for making baskets and furniture. When cut into sections, rattan can be used as wood to make furniture. Rattan accepts paints and stains like many other kinds of wood, so it is available in many colour, and it can be worked into many styles.

Why is it sustainable?

Rattan grows 7 times faster compared to a tree and each vine can grow to 200m in length. Harvesting is done by hand and the tip of the vine is then re-planted at the base of it's tree ready to repeat the process.

Besides helping to protect forests from degradation, it also provides a source of income for the people in the rural area. Rattan is also an alternative to deforestation due to palm oil production, undisruptive to the habitat for endangered species.
